Most of the materials focus on Hummel's professional life and his work with Chinese materials. Arthur William Hummel (1884-1975) was a missionary to China and Chief of the Orientalia Collection at the Library of Congress. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.S. and B.D., and worked as a English teacher and missionary in Peking and Fenchow, China. After his return he was hired to work at the Library of Congress, where he remained until his retirement in 1954.
